connected by transparent walkways, and situated to maximize privacy and views to the landscape. As part of the design team, I participated in materiality studies for the cladding, eventually determining that simple hemlock clapboards would be most appropriate and allow the cubes to blend with their surroundings. I also developed door and window details that reinforced the volumetric expression of the cubes by maintaining the exterior planer surfaces, and minimizing the visible components. construction of this award winning seven story apartment building. The Stack was one of the first prefabricated steel and concrete multi-unit residential buildings built in New York City. The fifty-six modules were fabricated offsite in a factory in rural Pennsylvania, transported to the city, and erected over the course of a few weeks. Due to the location and construction method, we encountered a number of unique challenges during this exciting project. The foundation had to address the ‘line of influence’ of the adjacent subway tunnel, building system connections needed to be considered in the unit layouts in order to allow for municipal inspections and site ‘zip-up’, the prefabricator (accustom to building roadside motels) was asked to build to more stringent tolerances in order to meet the developer’s expectations, and it was necessary to anticipate construction details during the off-site fabrication that would typically require the verification of as-built conditions. cast in place concrete high rise, I led the study of multiple schematic design schemes through construction. Working closely with the client, we achieved the requested open floor plan and modern, clean aesthetic. The building presented numerous constraints such as a low floor to slab height of about 8’-4”, multiple fixed vertical chases, and a large central building core. The executed design accentuates the long views to the east and west, unifies the different spaces with uninterrupted ceiling and floor planes, and provides the owners a place to live quietly and entertain. A prime example of Architect-led-Design-build, the modern 27,000 square foot home is embedded into the bluff overlooking Lake Michigan. My responsibilities included the coordination and ordering of all electrical and plumbing fixtures; working directly with subcontractors to develop installation details; detailing of custom door hardware while working with the fabricator to leverage their capabilities; and the designing and detailing of custom plumbing fixtures, millwork and kitchen cabinetry. Construction, I oversaw all aspects of this SCB designed project: the gut renovation of a full floor in William Le Baron Jenney’s Ludington Building, Chicago’s oldest surviving steel-frame highrise. I worked with the faculty and administration to develop the program, managed the RFP process for the design team and construction manager selection, negotiated the contracts, and intensely monitored the design process so that the end result was in keeping with the established campus standards that I had developed on prior projects. I coordinated the furniture and fixtures, as well as the extensive AV and theater equipment needs from design through installation. During construction, I reviewed all the pay applications and change orders, and commissioned an alumni artist for a unique mural. The project was completed on time, and 5% under budget. The resulting high quality and adaptable learning environment was so appreciated by the students and faculty that it established new expectations for future campus construction projects.
